As of yesterday I am officially a reviewer of academic papers. I submitted my first review for a paper submitted to the Journal of Applied Ecology. In review, I think there's more to be gained from reviewing than service to "The Community." The kinds of things I looked for to evidence the authors were doing a good job were the same things I should be putting into my own papers. It's hard to see that when you're the one writing. All the details are in your mind, and that can make it hard to put the important stuff on paper. So, I hope to do some more reviews, and maybe make myself a checklist of things to put down.
